RIYADH: A soldier who was posted at the Kingdom’s southern border has just fulfilled his dream of climbing some of the world’s highest mountains to hoist the Saudi flag.
“I undertook the mission to honor Saudi martyrs who have laid their lives down for the Kingdom,” he said after reaching the summits of Mount Elbrus in Russia and Toubkal in Morocco recently.
Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain in Europe while Toubkal in Morocco is the highest peak in the Atlas mountains.
Naif bin Faye Al-Asiri fulfilled his dream after spending long periods of training to gain endurance and toughen his legs before climbing the mountains.
“Our souls are with you,” Asiri said with the martyrs in mind, after reaching the top of the mountains and hoisted the Saudi flag.
He said that climbing some of the world’s highest mountains was his way of paying respects to soldiers who have died in defending the borders of the Kingdom as well as its religion.
“It’s also a continuation of my duty as a soldier to defend the borders of the Kingdom at all costs even at the cost of losing life and limb,” he said.
He added that he felt happy and relaxed that he had climbed two high mountains which required not only skills, courage and endurance but also a lot of prayers.
“It gives me self-fulfilment and I hope that it’s worth the sacrifice of fellow Saudi soldiers who are now recognized as martyrs,” said Al-Asiri.
He said that after the Haj holidays, he is scheduled to climb other mountains considered among the world’s highest. He didn’t mention, though, what mountains he would climb next.
He added that what he had accomplished “is insignificant compared to the valor and heroism of the soldiers who have died in defending the borders of the Kingdom.”
