This is with reference to the report “Saudis demand laws to protect girls from domestic violence” (March 5). This is a very timely demand and everyone must support the online campaign. There should be an end to this menace.

This is not just another drive for women’s rights. It is about protecting our womenfolk and children from domestic violence. The unfortunate incidents that recently came to the fore involved girls but the bitter truth is even boys are not immune to domestic violence.

After going through various reports about domestic violence, one wonders if the perpetrators were even Muslims.

Their actions were in sharp contrast with the teachings of Islam. Our religion teaches us to treat women and children with kindness. We are followers of a religion that forbids harming women, children and the elderly even during wars.

These individual actions bring a bad name to Islam. Unfortunately in some cases, the culprits belonged to religious backgrounds. Domestic violence and gender crimes are major issues with far-reaching consequences.

People exposed to violence at home find it difficult to adapt to a social setup and they fail to become healthy individuals who can contribute positively to the society. If only we follow the true teachings of Islam, many of our social issues will be resolved in no time.

Having said that I would urge the authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy to fight this menace. It is detrimental to the growth of the society. People found guilty of domestic violence or gender crimes should be severely punished.
