This is with reference to the report “Cylinder shops to be shifted from residential areas” (March 3). It is a very wise and timely decision. This move was long overdue. The presence of outlets dealing in gas cylinders indeed is a threat to the safety of the public.

No matter how safe one plays, such things should be kept at a safe distance. Recently a gas tank explosion at a Turkish restaurant in Qatar’s capital city Doha killed 12 people. Initial investigation reports suggest that the explosion was caused due to a faulty gas cylinder. It is a serious issue. It has been noticed that in most parts of the Kingdom shops selling gas cylinders are located in densely populated residential areas posing a great threat to the lives and properties of the people. Although the presence of these shops makes it convenient for us to go and buy cylinder whenever required and sometimes without having to go by cars but one must think in the long run. Many people often quote Napoleon Bonaparte who once said: “The torment of precautions often exceeds the dangers to be avoided. It is sometimes better to abandon one’s self to destiny.”

This is a very wrong approach toward life. We must take all precautionary measures and then leave the rest to destiny. I see this decision as a precaution and appreciate the authorities for this step. I hope the decision is implemented at the earliest. In addition to moving these depots/shops outside residential areas, the authorities must ensure the fitness of the cylinders being sold at these outlets.
