This is with reference to the article “Zakat is the only way to fight poverty” (Feb. 26) by Abdulateef Al-Mulhim.

I really like the writing style of Al-Mulhim. He highlights important issues in a very simple and interesting manner.

I totally agree with the writer that Zakat is the best way to fight poverty. It is so true that in Islam lies the solution to all social, political and economic ills. If we study Islam properly, it will dawn on us that through the institution of Zakat, our religion has devised a system to effectively eradicate poverty.

Islam urges Muslims to help the weaker sections of the society. Despite having a social security system in the form of Zakat, it is really a matter of serious concern that poverty is rampant in the Muslim world. This shows that we are not following the system properly.

Muslim intellectuals and wealthy individuals should heed the valuable advice of Al-Mulhim and try to adopt a proper management system of Zakat distribution.

If we take appropriate measures in this regard we can easily eradicate poverty from the Muslim world. Zakat can eradicate poverty and when you eradicate poverty, you can eradicate a number of problems, and most important is that for this you earn the reward from God.
