This is with reference to the report “Islamic scholars draw out plan to combat polio” (Feb. 28). It is an interesting and timely development. The role of religious scholars should not be confined to disseminating religious information from the pulpit. It is very important to educate the masses on social issues and create awareness about a host of issues facing the society.

Religious scholars of Saudi Arabia hold great sway in the entire Muslim world and they must use this respect and influence to promote various causes among Muslims. In various Muslim countries like Pakistan, polio vaccination is thought to be a conspiracy against Muslims, which is obviously a misconception.

Due to this mindset, many children have become victims of this crippling disease. Religious scholars must also educate Muslims on various other issues particularly the false concept of Jihad being promoted by a handful of people for their vested interests.

It is high time that religious scholars assumed their true roles in the Muslim society and should not remain confined to moral policing. Unfortunately, many scholars in the past had taken up similar causes but over time they deviated from the path by getting involved into unnecessary politics. At this point in time, we need religious authorities to come to the fore without getting into politics. They must leave the politics to the State and concentrate on educating the masses.
