With the election campaign gathering momentum for the upcoming May 11 polls, sporadic attacks in Pakistan targeting police, security forces and the leading public figures are aimed at disrupting the electoral process.

Though such incidents of violence are nothing new but the recent escalation in such occurrences indicates the volatility of the situation.

It is the duty of the government to facilitate a steady and protected environment to mitigate the increasing tense situation as elections approach. The coming elections are significant in terms of strengthening of the democratic system of government.

No doubt, the completion of a full five-year term for the outbound PPP-led government has been a success for democracy, a first for any elected setup in the country. Yet the road ahead is bumpy with an uphill task.

The caretaker government of Mir Hazar Khan Khoso encounters tough jobs, including overseeing free and fair elections, handling state affairs in the interim period and maintaining security.

Many political figures fear for their lives. Public rallies are part and parcel of any election campaign; and there is therefore a high chance of terrorists and other anti-national forces targeting such public gatherings. It is hence imperative for the government to take measures for the sake of public security.

The caretaker government should also stay unbiased and not get involved in any power bickering between different parties.

Likewise, other institutions like the presidency, the military and the intelligence services must stay away from the political dealings and allow the process to take its normal course. It is up to the people to choose who will lead them for the next term. — Shaukat Naeem Ghumman, Riyadh
