This refers to the report “Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt to go to jail without a fight” (March 29). It is really disappointing to hear that Sanjay Dutt after serving 18 months in jail will have to surrender again for serving another three and half years. Chairman of the Press Council of India Justice Markandey Katju has rightly said that Dutt is not a terrorist and he should be pardoned.

Also, Katju has done a good thing by sending a mercy appeal to President Pranab Mukherjee on behalf of Sanjay Dutt and Zaibunissa, a 71-year-old convict. Indeed, Sanjay Dutt is a shattered man and might be under depression that is why he told the media that he would not fight and would accept honorable Supreme Court’s verdict.

I think courts must see the conduct and daily activities of a person before delivering their verdicts. There is no doubt that Sanjay Dutt hails from good family background.

His late father, Sunil Dutt, the then Congress MP, was a philanthropist, and worked a lot for the poor and needy people of Mumbai. His late mother, Nargis, was a renowned actress and good human being.

And his sister, Priya Dutt, the Congress MP, is serving people of Mumbai in an emphatic way and rendering her services to the poor people. As far as, Sanjay Dutt is concerned, he is a renowned actor, and if he spends his three and half years in the jail, he may face a lot of financial losses as he is doing lead roles many unfinished films.

And if you see his background, he is a generous person and he is always in the habit of giving big donations to poor people and leading a decent and noble life. I think all these credentials are enough to prove that the person has an excellent character and is a good man.

It would have been better if the Supreme Court had pardoned him and let him free to do his positive works for the people and for himself. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
