This refers to the column “The on world community’s hands” by Aijaz Zaka Zyed. I would like to thank the author for the article. But frankly speaking I did not agree with his analysis of the Syrian conflict His arguments were neither accurate nor fair. The fact of the matter is that the battle for Syria is currently fought on three different levels. The writer discussed one, touched upon a second and completely ignored the third.
First of all it is a conflict involving the revolutionaries and the tyrant. However, it is totally unlike Egypt or Tunisia but quite similar to Yemen and Bahrain.
Secondly, this is a conflict between the declining West and the insurgent Russia as well as a rising China.
Finally, this is a conflict between the hard-liners on both sides of the divide.
It is not a simple conflict to be resolved and, in my opinion, it will play out for years if not decades. Hence, please don’t anticipate a quick resolution of this conflict. — Khalid Omar Siddiqi, By e-mail
