This refers to the report “Taxi firms hold drivers accountable for accidents, licenses” (April 19). This move speaks volumes of the attitude of taxi companies toward their drivers. It is grave injustice to hold drivers accountable for accidents in which there are no faults of their own. Why do they need to pay accident charges?

Owners of these taxi companies must understand that taxi drivers toil very hard to earn a living. How can they be able to pay for accidents? Also, these companies are not willing to transfer the sponsorship and they are forcing the drivers to operate taxis without having proper license.

I think this will add to the miseries of the taxi drivers who are earning their bread and butter in foreign soil, away from their families, and many of them have come to the Kingdom after taking heavy loans from others in their country. Without proper iqama status, they can be caught by the police and deported to their respective countries where they will have to pay back the loan that they took for coming here.

I think the government authorities should look into this to address the plight of taxi drivers. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
