RIYADH: The Saudi Red Crescent Authority, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, implemented a 31-stage program of visible communication with Guantanamo detainees during the month of Shawwal, enabling video calls and visits with prisoners and their families in Riyadh, Makkah and Madinah, with between two and a half to three hours for each call and visit.
Prince Bandar bin Faisal, deputy director general of International Affairs at the Saudi Red Crescent, said that the committee enabled 14 families to contact and visit relatives detained abroad during this stage, which lasted 14 days.
They contacted their relatives through Skype in the presence of a delegate from the Red Cross and a team from the Red Crescent Authority at the Department of International Affairs.
Prince Bandar bin Faisal said that in Jeddah four calls and two visits were made, Madinah had three calls, while Riyadh had three calls and one family visit.
He stressed that the Red Crescent Authority aims to respond to humanitarian needs through voluntary work, in which its members were involved throughout the year.
Humanitarian work is one of the pillars of volunteer work in the Kingdom and abroad, he said. Family members of the detainees said the authority has been doing great humanitarian work for them, working to overcome all obstacles and difficulties, and such efforts will never be forgotten.
