JEDDAH: Five international rights organizations from London are calling for the formation of a joint-rights commission to secure the release of Saudi student Khaled Al-Dossari, who is currently detained in an American prison, lawyer Saud bin Qoweid revealed.
The organizations are using all available means to realize their goals and secure his release, he said, noting that they have expressed their concerns about the status and deteriorating health condition of the student, who was sentenced to life in prison in the United States.
The five organizations — the International Association of Rights and Freedoms in the UK, the Bahraini Human Rights Watch Society, the Organization of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Karama Association for Human Rights in Bahrain, and the GCC-European Center for Human Rights — signed a joint statement and petition demanding his release, Al-Dossari’s lawyer confirmed. He said the organizations will begin efforts in the coming weeks via American legal channels to assist the efforts of the prisoner’s legal team.
He said Al-Dossari’s health is in critical condition and he is in immediate need of treatment, but American authorities are refusing to provide any medical assistance.
Al-Dossari was sentenced to life in prison in Illinois in 2011, after facing numerous charges related to attempting to bomb the home of former US President George Bush, and American amusement parks and dams.
He was convicted on one charge of “owning a weapon of mass destruction,” and was detained in isolation, resulting in the deterioration of his physical and psychological health.
