Ministry of Commerce officials in Jeddah confiscated more than 5,000 air conditioners being sold in the black market for half the price of regular ACs during ad hoc inspection raids on home appliance stores on Arbaeen Street in Jeddah.

The market, one of the largest in Jeddah for household appliances, failed to meet energy consumption specifications, an official source from the ministry’s branch in Jeddah told Arab News.

The official warned consumers against purchasing poor-quality, second-hand air conditioners.

“Consumers should purchase only top-notch, certified appliances that consume less electricity,” he said.

Inspection teams will continue to inspect shops and commercial centers selling unauthorized appliances in Jeddah, he said.

The sale of old air-conditioning units has increased to record levels in the black market thanks to low prices despite the fact that many consumers have reported higher electricity bills after using these second-hand appliances.

“The sale of old AC units takes place through second-hand, undercover deals with customers,” said one employee working at an electrical appliances store.
