JEDDAH: The Ministry of Justice’s statistical yearbook revealed that some 300,000 cases were handled by courts of first instance in the Kingdom in one year.
Twenty-five percent of the cases concerned rights issues, 24 percent were personal status cases, and 51 percent were criminal cases.
The Jeddah court dealt with more than 10,000 family cases in one year, including 1,600 divorce cases; 1,280 financial cases; 1,320 custody cases; 399 cases of proving divorce; 333 requests by wives for divorce; 163 requests for documents in marital matters; 181 dowry cases; 105 cases concerning disapproval of marriage by male guardians; and 5 cases for proving DNA relations, among others.
At least 15 percent of criminal cases involved women, including cases of escape, defamation and ethical issues, most of which involved non-Saudi women. Personal and family status cases, including divorce, finances, custody, or women divorcing husbands made up most of the cases in courts.
