Fifty-three students in Jazan University’s college of business management for girls were hospitalized on Tuesday after they fainted in a stampede as they panicked to get out of the college following a power cut.

Ibrahim bin Mohammed Abuhadi, spokesman of the university, said the accident occurred when the electricity supply to the college disrupted from the main source of power. He said many students were held up inside the lift, adding that they were rescued without causing any injury for them.

“Some students fainted due to fear and panic,” Abuhadi said, adding that 47 students have left hospitals after receiving treatment. “Six students are still in hospital. They are under observation and their condition is stable,” he said.

Another report carried by sabq.org said 59 girls were injured in the incident. Maj. Yahya Al-Qahtani, spokesman of the Civil Defense Department in Jazan, said his organization was informed about the incident at 9 a.m.

The Red Crescent said they had transported 28 students to hospitals. “We sent first-aid teams to the college and provided necessary treatment to the injured,” said Yasser Al-Niami, assistant director of the department.
