Waleed Al-Ghuraibi, the seven-year-old boy who fell into a coma after suffering an electric shock at the Jeddah Corniche, has died a month after the tragic incident, his grandfather told a local newspaper.

Nawaf Al-Bouq, official spokesman for the Jeddah police, has said that the case has been referred to the the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, but declined to give further details.

Investigations indicated that the wires along the ground at the Corniche were uncovered.

Authorities have blamed both the electricity company responsible for installing the cables and the Jeddah Municipality for the accident.

Jeddah Municipality spokesman Abdulaziz Al-Ghamdi said his department is awaiting a statement from the bureau, but denied any knowledge of the accusation.

Humoud Al-Ghuraibi, Waleed’s uncle, holds the municipality responsible for his death. “No one from the municipality has contacted us or even paid their respects,” he said.






The Al-Ghuraibi family had come from Taif to spend the mid-term break in Jeddah last month.

Waleed was playing football at the Al-Hamra section of the Corniche when he was electrocuted by a bare wire on the ground.

The family had since been staying at a furnished apartment awaiting Waleed’s recovery.
