RIYADH: In the month of May, 46,232 traffic accidents on the country’s roads killed 736 people, at a rate of 24 deaths a day, or a death every hour.
According to latest statistics, the traffic accidents resulted in injuries to 3,184 people. The injuries ranged from simple to very severe, an increase of 1.5 percent over April.
Riyadh topped the list in terms of the number of accidents with 27 percent of the total, or 12,351 accidents, at a rate of 412 traffic accidents a day, followed by Makkah with 11,546 accidents.
In the Eastern Province, the overall number of traffic accidents in May recorded a fall of 2 percent compared to April. With 8,431 accidents, the region ranked third, followed by Asir with 2,838 accidents, Qasim 2,403, and Jazan 2,342. Najran recorded the least number of traffic accidents during the month with only 290.
Madinah recorded 1,352 traffic accidents, the Northern Borders 1,224, Tabuk 1,182, Jouf 944, Hail 938, and Baha 391 during the same month.
Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Traffic banned tinting of windshields of any official vehicle, asserting that such an action will be treated as a violation of the law and will incur penalties that might involve impounding the vehicle, according to the applicable regulations of the Kingdom.
The traffic department called on citizens and residents to report any vehicle they see with tinted windshields.
The General Directorate of Traffic recently started delivering vehicle licenses via Saudi Post to the residential addresses of clients registered on the Absher system in Riyadh.
To benefit from this service, the client must register his residential address on the electronic portal of the service so that the procedures can be followed with accuracy and credibility.
