The earthquakes that have struck Jazan over the past two days have not affected the nearby Beesh dam, a statement from the Ministry of Water & Electricity said.

Responding to reports that warned of post-quake tsunamis, ministry experts found that there were no problems in the dam’s foundation.

Authorities were told to exercise caution, as two tremors, one of which measured 5.1 on the Richter scale, hit the Jazan and the Red Sea area recently.

Reports recently released by professionals stressed the need for safe shelters, centers for earthquake studies and more geologists in the area. There were also suggestions on the training of volunteers in crisis management and giving courses on how to deal with disasters.

There were also recommendations for the government to ensure that buildings, and hospitals in particular, abide by strict safety measures.

Water Ministry experts confirmed that dams are safely designed. Dam-building schemes took into account volcanic and earthquake activity as a first priority, the ministry’s statement stated.
