Saudi Customs has said that the confiscation of prohibited items has increased by 199 percent against the year before. This is translated to a record figure of 50 million units and more than 2 million tons worth of seized goods. 

The customs annual report for 2011/2012 showed that numbers of faked items amounted to 15 million units, 9 percent less than the year before. 

The financial affairs committee at the Shoura Council said that this increase confirms two points: The insistence of violators to surpass laws and regulations; and the failure of customs officers in this regard. 

The committee asked about the size of prohibited items entering the country, referring to the urgent need to address any gaps that facilitate the passing of the items.

The report included the fact that the most advanced systems and equipment are used at customs check points, including 22 radiology screens and detection devices and 16 systems for screening trucks and containers. For this purpose, more than 200 personnel were trained on the use of such devices and systems and how they can protect themselves against radiation. 

In addition, police dogs are used to detect drugs, arms, explosives and other such items that can be smuggled through international borders. 

It is worth mentioning that Saudi Customs have been assigned the task of granting licenses for importing and using live means of security, such as police dogs, to private institutions and firms working in the field of special security.
