In a tragic accident, a woman and her four grandchildren including a 10-month-old baby were charred to death in a blaze that raged across their home at Al-Qurain village in north Al-Ahsa on Wednesday, local media reported.

The children were aged between six years and 10 months, an official said, adding that another child suffered serious burn injuries. Seven others who were caught in the fire were rescued by Civil Defense personnel.

Spokesman of the Eastern Province Civil Defense Col. Ali Al-Qahtani said the Civil Defense Operations Room in Al-Ahsa received a report of a fire at an old house in Al-Qurain village. Three teams of firefighters and three teams of rescuers accompanied by ladder trucks and other equipment were immediately dispatched to the accident site.

The flames were put out and seven people trapped inside were brought out and taken to Prince Saud bin Julawi Hospital. A woman also suffered simple burn injuries, the daily reported, adding that the child with serious burn injuries was rushed to a maternity and children’s hospital. Investigations are under way.
