DAMMAM: Experts in safety and security registered the types of accidents children experienced during the last Eid festivities. At the top of these accidents are rural go-carts and fireworks, which can lead to death or severe burns.

Parents have been told to take care of their children during entertainment visits with the family and watch what they buy in the malls.

The head of the emergency department at King Fahd University Hospital in Akhobar, Dr. Moyealdin Alwahaas, said incidents increase during Eid celebrations in Saudi Arabia. Some of these can be avoided, he said, which include motorcycle accidents and firecrackers, car accidents and drownings.

He said the hospital treated 35 cases during this last Eid, including one case of amputation of the fingers, and severe burns and injuries to the eyes.

He added accidents increase in the Eastern Province during the festivities and also because the area attracts people for tourism as it is a corridor to the Gulf countries.

An expert in safety and security, Dr. Khaled Fakri, agreed that fireworks during Eid cause accidents among young and older children, and some of these can be dangerous.

He added that it is a pity that fireworks enter the country with ease and without control, and any child can buy them from a supermarket or nearby shops, despite the fact that they are made of chemicals that are easily activated and can turn into gas, fire and explosion. Fakri said some have led to major injuries and deaths.

Emergency doctor Mohammad Aljiman reconfirmed that the main accidents during the Eid are among children. He said during the Eid festivities the hospital remains on a standby situation.
