DAMMAM: The Ministry of Justice has enforced the implementation of the child protection system on those who avoid paying Shariah-imposed child support, considering it a form of violence.
The ministry said it has asked courts to order imprisonment of up to seven years of those who didn’t pay even when they had the money.
A source in the Ministry of Justice explained that the courts of execution during the current year forced 2,700 men to pay child support for children and reviewed 3,000 cases in this regard. The source said that this came as a result of the increase in this type of cases. The judge can find out from the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency the amount of money in the bank account of the father and his salary, and he can then order a direct deduction of the payment from his account.
Minister of Justice Walid Al-Samaani pointed out in a speech to judges that the child protection system states that carelessness is in the failure to provide the basic needs of the child.
Al-Samaani stressed the fact that the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution investigates irregularities on condition the case is taken to a court which is responsible for reviewing violations of the provisions in the system, and decides the appropriate punishment for those who violate.
The minister said that the protection from abuse system states that the violator shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one month, and not more than one year with a fine of not less than SR5,000 and not more than SR50,000, or both.
