JEDDAH: The Specialized Criminal Court has imposed a preliminary sentence of seven years in prison against a citizen for supporting Daesh and Al-Qaeda, and inciting on social media to support those who were detained on terrorism charges in the Kingdom.
The court has proven that the defendant was guilty of preparing, storing and dealing with materials that are harmful to public order and are considered a crime punishable under Article VI of the Anti-Cybercrime Law.
He also created an account on the social networking website Twitter, and sent links to videos of Daesh terrorists; had communications with a number of supporters of the organization; and exchanged news and logged onto sites that support the terrorist group.
The court papers explained that the defendant had saved photos that support the terrorist organization Daesh, and saved images of Al-Qaeda leader on his mobile device and computer.
He also had photos that called for the support defendants of attacks who were detained on terrorism charges. He downloaded images showing the Daesh slogan, printed and hung them in his bedroom. He was found to be following Al-Islah TV channel, and he would watch it over YouTube. He was also found to be covering up for one of his friends who called for fighting in conflict areas, and contacting this friend on WhatsApp.
The indictment stated that the defendant sought to go to fight in Syria, join Daesh and communicated with one of the people who called for fighting there.
The defendant was sentenced to seven years in jail, starting from his arrest date four years ago, based on the royal decree, and three years on the basis of Article VI of the Anti-Cybercrime Law, as well as confiscating his mobile device and computer.
The court decided to close the defendant’s Twitter account, based on Article 13 of the same law, as well as prevent him from traveling abroad for seven years starting from his release date.
