The Environmental Health Department at the Dammam Municipality closed down 210 shops that were found to be in violation of health and hygiene standards during its inspection tours in 2013.

In addition, around 254,000 kg of food unfit for human consumption was destroyed and SR1.2 million in fines were imposed against violators. A total of 1,502 warning notices were released and 43 pledges were signed.

This came within an annual statistical report issued by the municipality that includes initiatives taken by the Department of Environmental Health over the past year and highlights the number of inspection tours and closures made and violations detected.

Hatem Al-Ghamdi, acting mayor of the Central Dammam Municipality, said that 7,275 inspection tours were conducted in that time.

He said, “Inspections were carried out in two shifts. Teams targeted several shops and laborers to ensure they held valid health certificates. In addition, field inspectors also assessed personal hygiene, adherence to wearing uniforms, gloves and a head cover.”

He pointed out that inspections and raids would continue on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, Freed Al-Maghloth, director of the Department of Environmental Health, appreciated the efforts made by inspectors and called on citizens and residents to cooperate with inspectors by reporting any health violations.

“The campaigns would continue to ensure the facilities’ commitment to health and environmental requirements and to ensure the provision of food fit for consumers,” he said.
