Friends of the late P.M. Abdul Rahman, 66, a former employee of Saudi Arabian Airlines and a founder of Muslim Educational Society’s Jeddah chapter, commemorated his contributions to community development. Abdul Rahman died of cerebral hemorrhage at a hospital in Kochi.
“Abdul Rahman was an active social worker and was associated with a number of Keralite and non-Keralite organizations,” said Usman Irumpuzhi, a journalist.
“He was the driving force behind MES relief work for the Lathoor earthquake victims,” he added.
Abdul Rahman was also associated with Saudi-Indian Football Forum (SIFF), which is currently organizing a major tournament at the Education Ministry Stadium in Jeddah with the participation of 26 teams. “He was a loving and caring personality,” Irumpuzhi added.
MES held a meeting in Jeddah in honor of the late community leader and highlighted his services in social and cultural fields.
“Abdul Rahman was a good example of an ideal social worker,” said P.V. Ashraf, president of the organization’s Jeddah chapter.
A graduate of Farook College in Calicut, Abdul Rahman had obtained his master’s and doctorate degrees in mathematics from Aligarh Muslim University. Before coming to Saudi Arabia, he had taught at PSMO College in Tirurangadi and Calicut University.
He worked for Saudia for 28 years from 1976 before joining Etihad Airways in Dubai and Al-Salama Aircraft Company in Riyadh. As an active social worker, he supported the community welfare activities of the Indian Consulate in Jeddah and Embassy in Riyadh.
He collapsed at work place in April 2011 following the brain hemorrhage and received specialized treatment at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh. His wife, Beena, who was a teacher at the International Indian School in Jeddah, and two daughters, survive him.
