The Eye Specialist Hospital in Dhahran has conducted nearly 3,000 surgeries and 2,000 laser surgeries in less than a year.

A report issued by the hospital said the surgeries were conducted in the various specialties of ophthalmology that included glaucoma, retina, vitrectomy, Pediatric Ophthalmology, strabismus, Oculoplasty, Oculoplastics and Orbit Division, cornea, the front of the eye and cataract surgeries. “There were 260 cornea transplant surgeries as well.”

Dr. Eman Abdulatif Al-Mulla, the hospital director said that the number of patients in the emergency department reached 16788 patients during the past year while the number in the Outpatients’ department reached 65830.

She said, “About 3213 patients were hospitalized while 5082 patients were transferred from other hospitals in the Eastern Province at the beginning of February.”

Dr. Al-Mulla said, “The Eye Specialist Hospital has all the specialized clinics plus the neuro-opthalmology, ocular inflammation, visual impairment, laser and anaplastology clinics, in which the technical specialists manufacture and assemble high quality artificial eyes’ templates.”

She mentioned that there are development plans in place that aim to create job opportunities and attract qualified and talented doctors in rare sub-specialists in order to activate all the specialized services of ophthalmology to serve Eastern Province patients including Hafr Al-Batin and Al-Ahsa.

“The plans will cover the futuristic growing needs and innovate job offers for technical and management staff and support hospitals with new technology,” she added.
