Sibya General Hospital was recently found to have dispensed two expired bottles of medicine to a female patient, local media said.

The patient went to Sibya Hospital three weeks ago after suffering from a skin disease and was told to get two injections administered. She was given one of the injections without verifying the date on the bottle, Khalid Al-Attar, the patient’s brother, told a local daily.

A week later, the patient approached a medical center to have the second injection administered.

The nurse then discovered that the injection was out of date. The patient returned to Sibya Hospital and asked for a substitute injection, he said.

He called on officials to penalize the hospital staff responsible for overseeing medical supplies for negligence. He also urged for intensifying control mechanisms and forming committees to monitor the quality of medicine products, injections and dairy products being given to patients to avoid malpractice suits.

Mohamed Al-Sumaili, media spokesman for Jazan Health Affairs, said no complaints were officially lodged in this case. Negligence will never be tolerated, he was quoted as saying.

A similar incident took place a few days ago when Jazan Hospital dispensed expired milk to an elderly patient in his seventies, who was suffering from a stroke.

Accordingly, the head of Home Medicine at Jazan Health Affairs was relieved from his duties.
