The Philippine Embassy has extended the deadline of entries to the EDSA 28 Essay Writing Contest till Sunday, due to demands from the Filipino community, according to Ambassador Ezzedin H. Tago.

The original deadline was February 20.

The competition coincides with celebrations of the "People Power 1," which commemorates the Feb. 23-25 event when Filipinos rallied along EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue) to oust the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos from power. The embassy is also opening the “professionals category” to all Filipino professionals in the Kingdom, regardless of age.

According to an embassy source, the interested parties must submit an essay of 1,000-1,500 words, answering the question: "What EDSA spirit do you think should be espoused by Filipinos for them to eventually rise?”

Submitted essays must be original, not previously published, and will be judged according to substance, adherence to theme, eloquence and language fluency, it said.

Only one entry per participant is allowed.

Entries will become the property of the Philippine Embassy and may be reproduced, published, or used for promotional or publication purposes without prior permission from or compensation to the author. Winners will receive cash prizes and certificates from the embassy, according to the source.

It said entries may be submitted via email to [email protected]. A separate MS Word file containing the full name, age, contact numbers and a scanned copy of the current school I.D. of the participant (for students) and iqama (for professionals) must also be sent.
