Flights to and from India’s Cochin International Airport resumed on Tuesday, 30 hours after authorities suspended operations following flash floods that submerged the runway, resulting in the cancelation of several international flights and the diversion of a flight from Riyadh.

Cochin Airport, which is Kerala’s largest airport handling the highest number of Gulf passengers, was closed on Monday due to the flooding of runways caused by a release of water from a nearby dam. Local media reported that the airport runway was flooded by three meters of water.

A Saudia flight from Riyadh was diverted to Chennai due to closure of the airport on Monday and 15 other international flights were canceled. The airport resumed operations on Tuesday afternoon after the water was pumped out from the runways.

Saudia flight SV779 bound for Riyadh and then Jeddah had departed within a couple of hours of clearing the runways on Tuesday evening, while Saudia flight SV774 arrived on Wednesday morning. An Air India flight from Jeddah is also set to take off on Thursday as per schedule, as airport operations returned to normal.

Airport authorities swung into action to avoid a backlog of passengers in Cochin and in Gulf countries and also allowed airlines to operate larger aircraft from the Gulf region on account of the Eid holiday rush.
