Unknown gunmen opened fire at a police station in the eastern city of Awamiya, wounding three policemen, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Policemen were standing outside the police station when they came under “heavy gunfire,” a spokesman of the ministry told the Saudi Press Agency.

One of the three wounded men is in critical condition, the ministry said, adding that all the three were sent to hospital.

A manhunt has been launched to track down the gunmen. “These kinds of attacks will not desist police from performing their duties,” the ministry said.

Last week, a shootout in Awamiya had killed two policemen and two wanted militants.
