The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (known in Arabic as the "Haia") has released one of the five members who were arrested following a car chase on Saudi National Day, in which to brothers were killed.

A source closed to the commission said the member was released on bail, but that others are still in custody pending further investigation.

The incident involved a Haia field team car-chasing two brothers, killing one on the spot, according to the testimony of a witness who had filmed the chase. The other brother died later of his injuries.

A committee of officials comprising members from the commission, Riyadh Governorate and other government agencies was set up following the incident.

Abdullatif Al-Asheik, the president of the Haia, had denounced the chase by Haia members, saying that he had discouraged such acts after he assumed office.

He said that the media should not be hasty in their judgment. He dismissed allegations against Haia members stating that the two young brothers fell off the bridge because of the chase, stating that it was an accident of fate.

He said Haia members were keen to ensure the comfort and safety of citizens. “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah always gives his directions and orders to ensure the security and safety of Saudi people,” he said.

He said King Abdullah gave directions to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and submit the findings to him in person as soon as possible.

Al-Asheik said that the Haia agreed with Riyadh Gov. Prince Khaled bin Bandar to form an official committee to investigate the accident.

“The Haia will wait for the results of the investigation to prove and endorse the rights of all parties concerned without exhibiting prejudice to any one party,” he concluded.
