The United Nations and the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), an affiliate of the Muslim World League, may work together on future projects, a leading UN official said recently.

Valerie Amos, UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, was speaking at the fourth annual conference on effective partnership and information management for better humanitarian action organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), in collaboration with the Direct Aid Association in Kuwait. The conference began on Tuesday and will end on Sept. 19.

Amos said she admired IIRO’s humanitarian work and said the UN was ready to establish joint projects to help people across the world.

The Acting Secretary General of the IIRO Ehsaan Saleh Taieb met Amos at the gathering and said they had a “fruitful meeting” focusing on humanitarian and relief work.

Taieb presented a paper at the conference focusing on the IIRO's work, building the capacity of the organization, its partnerships and alliances to fight poverty, and supporting refugees around the world. The paper also shed light on IIRO’s efforts to support Syrian refugees.
