M. Ashraf, a senior sub-editor at Malayalam News, has won the 2014 achievement award of Arang, one of the oldest cultural Indian organizations in Jeddah. The award will be presented to Ashraf during the 31st annual festival of Arang here next month V. Omar, coordinator of the organization said.

“We have instituted this award to honor outstanding personalities and celebrate their wonderful skills,” said Omar, adding that the winner would be given a cash award, a certificate of appreciation and a memento. Previous winners include Vykam Mohammed Bashir.

He said that Ashraf was selected for the award by a three-member jury considering his remarkable contributions during the past 25 years.

Ashraf has been working for Malayalam News since its inception. His weekly column, “Malbu” has been popular for its witty and humorous take on the various issues facing expats in the Gulf.

Ashraf, who holds a master’s degree in economics, is a seasoned journalist with over 25 years of experience in the field. He worked for Madhyamam daily in Kerala for 10 years before joining Malayalam News.

V. Khaled, managing director of Skyway Cargo, which supports this year’s award program, congratulated Ashraf on his achievement.
