AL-AHSA: A recent contest as part of the Arar Summer Festival has kicked up a controversy, with twitterati crying foul and terming the actions of some men during the event as against the Saudi culture.
Photos of four men lying down and drinking milk from bottles like babies and competing to finish first went viral on social media, triggering more of criticism than humor.
The funny act by the men behaving like babies and moving their legs during the festival contest with a lullaby being played in the background is intolerable in Saudi society, as the comments on social media indicate.
Another event in Al-Ahsa festival during which children were told to feed their fathers amid peals of laughter was also condemned on social media.
Twitterati wondered how such events are being allowed in official festivals. Some ridiculed the shows, while one person sarcastically tweeted that some Disney cities are getting ready to close down after seeing such acts.
Another tweeter said those who went on holidays to Europe and other countries missed these unique shows.
Some of the acts during festivals are alien to Saudi culture and mainly described as trivial by citizens, as one act that turned a festival into a place for mixed dancing.
The incident brought back the memories of a show, which was organized by the chamber of commerce, during which former Eastern Province Gov. Mohammed bin Fahad left the place in a huff. He stormed out of the event and apologized to the audience and said he would have prevented it, if he knew about it before.
It was a dancing performance by foreign artists in tight outfits that had angered the governor, because such acts are against the traditions and customs of Saudi society. The governor’s action was welcomed by citizens and drew calls that all festivals should be follow local values, customs and traditions.
Hashim Saeed Al-Abood, a citizen, said these events show lack of supervision by relevant authorities.
“In our society, children are brought up with moral values so that they can be men of conduct. It the younger generation is exposed to such events, it will have a negative impact on their personality,” he added.
