RIYADH: Saudi Arabia will be represented at an international competition that will see members of the Muslim community compete in Qur’an recitals and the call to prayer.
The competition, launched by the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, continues a tradition that dates back to the middle of the seventh century AD.
Since the contest was announced in 2019, more than 40,000 contestants from 80 countries have participated.
After a series of qualifying stages, 36 candidates reached the final.
The finalists include 18 participants in the Holy Qur’an recitation category and 18 in the Adhan or call to prayer category.
The contest is aired during the Scent of Speech program on official state television during Ramadan.
Candidates will be selected by a jury of 13 international judges, who were selected for their expertise in various specializations, including phonetics, language and grammar — ensuring that only the very best win their share of the $3.2 million cash pot.
The winner of the Qur’an recitation receives $1.3 million, while the winner of the call to prayer receives $533,000.
The remainder of the prize money goes to the runners up.
