A group of Asian vendors selling fruit and vegetables behind the Al-Manar Market in the Azizia district have been found to be using vehicles as a source of electricity supply for lighting the site.

Vendors pay car owners SR50 per day to use their cars after evening prayers, according to one stall owner.

The site is one of the busiest in Jeddah, which suffers severe traffic congestion thanks to the presence of the Azizia Maternity And Children’s Hospital in the area.

Cameras spotted electrical wiring connecting cars to lighting posts in the park adjacent to the market.

Wires had been pulled through tree branches in the park to light the lamps hanging over each stand, posing a major health threat to residents, who have demanded that authorities remove them.

The local municipality had previously conducted inspections at the site and confiscated violating stalls.
