The Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP) administration has floated a tender for companies specialized in shipwrecks to pull out a cargo ship which sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Jeddah 70 years ago.

According to sources, the 105-meter-long and 12-meter-wide ship with four iron chambers was discovered following a survey of the port area.

Operations to remove the ship will include pulling out its body, cutting away the rock formation in the rotation area and deepening the area of the shipwreck by 17 meters below the standard levels approved in the port.

The removal procedures will begin as soon as the tender is awarded to the company selected for the operations. The removal of the shipwreck should be done within a year of awarding the contract.

The JIP also announced the auction of various cars, water equipment, a spare parts container, around 509 different kinds of fire extinguishers, electrical materials, wood, aluminum and iron.

The auction will be held on Feb. 10 during the port’s official working hours, and will continue until the stocks are sold out.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the supply team of petrochemicals manufacturers visited JIP last week to support the industrial and the national petrochemicals sector. The visit aims to achieve national, international and local goals.

Saher Tahlawi, director general of JIP, received the delegation and took them on a tour of the port. He explained the operational processes of the port and answered their questions about goods handling.
