JEDDAH: The recent trials to prosecute those accused of terrorism offenses have been described by legal experts and lawyers as consistent with the legal system. Specifically, they noted that all those accused were given the means to defend themselves, and enjoyed the full benefit of their human rights during the litigation process, held at the Kingdom’s Specialized Criminal Court.
Lawyer and legal adviser, Ibrahim Al-Abadi, also a former member of the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, was quoted as saying to a local publication: "The Kingdom’s own legal bodies are the most favorable option when determining how and where to carry out the trials.
This is particularly true for the Specialized Criminal Court, the body of jurisdiction that conducts the trials of outlawed persons, including terrorists. The Ministry of Justice also provided a number of specialist judges on terrorism-related issues to preside over the trials.”
He added that the Ministry of Justice assigns lawyers to defend the accused persons and always makes sure to give them the full freedom to talk and submit memos. Additionally, the ministry remains determined to grant them all of their personal rights, and even allows media into the court sessions to record the proceedings.
The head of the Lawyers Committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yaseen Khayyat, said that the court has provided all the necessary means for fair and just trials for each of the defendants accused of terrorism related offenses.
He confirmed that the Saudi judicial system is also keen to grant the defendants the right to appeal the judgments issued against them. Furthermore, “The Ministry of Justice has allocated a budget to pay the expenses and fees of the defense lawyers who advocate on behalf of those accused of terrorism-related offences,” said Khayyat.
He added that court maintains the dignity of the defendant during all phases of the trial, and never abuses or degrades them, and does not force the defendant to make admissions about their crimes.
