The father of Lama Al-Rouqi, the 6-year-old who fell to her death in an abandoned artesian well in the Al-Haql governorate in Tabuk in December, has filed a complaint against the media, which he says tarnished his family’s image by spreading rumors that he had deliberately thrown her into the well.

“Besides spreading false rumors, several media personalities tried to achieve fame through exploiting my daughter’s story,” the grieving father said in a formal complaint sent to Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Naif.

Al-Rouqi mentioned several journalists by name in the complaint. He said that media personalities were busy attacking him on Twitter as he waited at the well for his daughter’s body to be taken out, a local daily reported.

“They were fabricating stories about me and my daughter that no Muslim or anyone with an inkling of humanity would accept,” he said.

Lama’s father has vowed that he would not rest until the media culprits were brought to justice.

Lama had fallen into the 100-meter-deep well while playing with her sister during a family picnic.

The Tabuk governor ordered the Civil Defense to halt search operations after finding individual body parts because of the difficult internal structure of the well.

Al-Rouqi had tried to contact senior religious scholars after the search was called off to inquire whether it was permissible under Islam to perform funeral prayers after having received her remains.
