RIYADH: A court condemned a lawyer to 30 days in jail and 130 lashes “for insulting a citizen, the tribe he belongs to and the entity he works for during a quarrel.”
The court also ordered that lawyer to make pledge in writing to not offend the plaintiff, verbally or by deed, in the future.
It said it issued the verdict because the defendant used insulting language in court.
The lawyer appealed the verdict and the court accepted his appeal.
The public prosecution accused the lawyer of using derogatory and racist terms, as well as not respecting the court.
The lawyer said the lawsuit against him was meant to harm him and his reputation because he had won the original case, whose verdict was in his favor and whereby he had collected a 7-digit fee.
The court asked the plaintiff and the public prosecution to introduce more material evidence as one of the witnesses was a person from the same tribe of the plaintiff.
