ABHA: A number of political analysts and media experts have emphasized the importance of restoring the real identity of the Arab media and of not playing up feelings of fear and horror in the public.
Mohammad Al-Sabhi, director of Faculty of Information and Communication at Imam Mohammad bin Saud Islamic University, said that the problem with the media is that it has started believing that blood and horror — like in the action films — are the best way to attract viewers.
He noted the importance of professionalism among those who prepare the content of the media, emphasizing that they should take responsibility for the effect that the media has on the public. He also said that, because the viewer is the source of income for these channels, they need to work in the best interest of the viewer by spreading content that is positive, rather than negative and destructive.
Mohammad Al-Muzeeni, writer and journalist, said that the media is implicitly involved in the violence and terrorism that is engulfing the world, noting that the media's reaction is always more harsh than the action in some ways. He explained that in the cases of attacks in the US, France and elsewhere, it is often forbidden to broadcast photos of the dead, keeping in view the sentiments of viewers, and so as to not keep airing the same graphic pictures which install fear in the public.
He also noted that much of the public do not know about the interventions of the US in the Arab world for years. "What is happening is the result of American support to the terrorist operations being carried out by the Israeli Army against Palestinians. This is why they are trying to keep their people away from the photos and news.
Suleiman Al-Shammari, political analyst and professor of media, said that the ethical dimension is missing from the media. The media is free from the sentiments of love, justice and compassion which actually serves human beings. He said that whatever is happening in the media is a major "moral jolt", because it has adverse effect on politics and the political situation of the world. "Whatever we see in news bulletins regarding crimes, explosions and whatever is happening in the Middle East is simply the promotion of horror and death."
He said that the media is an umbrella and should protect humanity from social ills.
