JEDDAH: Social networking sites are no longer a means of social communication, dialogue and human interaction, but they also have become the official carrier of the circulars and government decisions and actions.
The Ministry of Health announced sometime earlier on its official account on Twitter the closure of a private hospital in northern Riyadh for violations after the facility failed to comply with hygiene issues and not responding to repeated notifications and alerts.
Immediately following the announcement of the ministry, broad support came by users of the networking site, and a number of them launched a hashtag entitled #health _ close _ hospital#, with letters of thanks and praise for the alert of the ministry, and the dedicated work of the minister and his ministry along with demands to continue the control on the unqualified health centers and hospitals that do not respond to statutory requirements, a local newspaper reported.
In this context, Rakan Al-Eyadah, a social media expert, said: “Social media brought about a paradigm shift in the services provided by the various government sectors as they are now able to announce their decisions and announcement through their official accounts to reach a wide range of beneficiaries. Such sectors could see the reactions toward the services provided and ways to improve it.”
He said these sites have helped to deliver the right information, adding that many sectors were able through the good management of their accounts on different social media to provide a positive image.
Coinciding with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education announced via the official account of Mubarak Al-Osaimi, the spokesman of the ministry, that Minister of Education Ahmad Al-Issa issued five warnings to five universities and colleges after the ministry detected a number of violations and academic irregularities during field visits conducted by specialized committees to these universities.
The announcement of the ministry said these universities and colleges were given a grace period of four months to rectify its status otherwise its admission programs would be suspended.
Although the news did not disclose the names of those universities, but they were considered by many users as the right step in the right direction.
