JEDDAH: Secondary schools will face a big problem if textbooks are not available in the first week of the academic year, especially for the scientific specialty and the English language.
An official at the Ministry of Education’s agency for curriculum and education programs, who preferred anonymity, said the ministry intends to activate the electronic curriculum at the beginning of this coming school year to minimize the risks involved in the delay of delivering textbooks.
Textbooks have been delayed because of many factors including the multiple stages of producing the books, the potential mistakes in the printing process, the problems of shipping the books, the storage problems and the vagaries of the weather.
The official pointed to the huge responsibility on the shoulders of the ministry because of the expansive and vast area of the country, and the need to deliver textbooks to each student, especially to the border towns, so that they can keep pace with the qualitative learning processes to achieve the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030.
He noted that with regard to the readiness of the education process for the new academic year, it is possible that English and scientific books for the first secondary classes will be available during the first week of study.
“This delay is due to financial reasons beyond the control and power of the ministry,” added the official.
A number of public schools were embarrassed last year because of the shortage of school textbooks.
