JEDDAH: Ministry of Health statistics shows a rise in gynecological operations; during the year 1436 AH 30,313 such operations were performed, of which 859, or around 2.83 percent, were hysterectomies.
Experts attribute the increase in hysterectomies to increased used of Caesarean deliveries and their arising complications.
Most of these operations, 253 or 29.4 percent, took place in Riyadh. Makkah came in second with 161 operations, followed by Tabuk with seven.
Obstetrics and gynecology consultant Dr. Hanaa Madani said hysterectomies may sometimes be needed. Causes include benign or malignant fibroids, uncontrolled bleeding, age and frequent C-sections.
She said over the past five years, the incidence of hysterectomy began to increase noticeably, and underlined that many doctors, especially in the private sector, do not give their patients the opportunity to give birth naturally and irresponsibly exaggerate the dangers of natural birth.
