Construction work at Heraa Street’s intersection with Prince Majed Street, otherwise known as Sabaeen Street, created traffic chaos at the weekend.

Traffic heading for the airport from the Tahlia Street overpass to the Hera Street construction site was at a standstill for most of the time.

Motorists are complaining that the municipality is undertaking the construction of underpasses and overpasses without notifying the public or instructions on how to avoid traffic bottlenecks. The problem worsens during traffic peak hours.

“I was not aware of construction work in this section of the road. I needed to take the Prince Majed Street route, but when I got there, it was closed and I had to take a detour, which derailed my work schedule,” complained Abdul Aziz.

Another motorist said that traffic moved at snail’s pace at the intersection of Tahlia Street with Prince Majed Street.

“They completed an underpass and overpasses on this road and then the municipality began construction on Prince Majed Street, which takes motorists to the airport road. There should be no traffic congestion because of the new flyovers and underpass, and yet during peak hours, we are faced with overcrowding and many accidents,” added Nabil Ahmed.

Another Jeddah resident lamented that traffic jams are not a new phenomenon for motorists in the city. Due to heavy traffic, motorists can be seen driving on sidewalks and curbs.
