JUBAIL: Approximately 45,000 Delonix trees have been cultivated by the forestation and irrigation department at the Royal Commission of Jubail (RCJ) in streets, school yards, mosques, neighborhood centers and the city center to add a unique aesthetic look and mitigate summer heat.
Delonix trees are distinguished by their red flowers, endurance of harsh climatic conditions of the region, and they are virtually evergreen trees and in areas with a marked dry season, it sheds its leaves during the drought.
Saleh Al-Mutairi, director of the RCJ forestation and irrigation department, said: “Delonix is a wild tree that spreads widely. Its dense foliage provides good shade and its height ranges between 5 and 12 meters with large red flowers, leaves and pods.”
On the economic and environmental value of the tree, Al-Mutairi said: “It is a useful shade tree that endures all temperatures in the spring and summer and the sun’s rays could get through it in the winter. This tree is also suitable for cultivation in the green spaces, the tree requires a tropical or near-tropical climate, but can tolerate drought and salty conditions.”
