RIYADH: The National Urban Heritage Center (NUHC) has launched a database project to protect and promote urban heritage across the Kingdom by developing a system that shares the list of national infrastructure.
The Geographical Information System (GIS) will be used to capture, store, analyze, manage and present all types of spatial or geographical data.
The project consists of two parts: To create a database of the most important heritage sites using GIS and to create a database to assist in the marketing of urban heritage sites as tourist products.
Meshari Al-Naeem, general superintendent of NUHC, said, “We were in need of establishing a national database for researchers, investors and people concerned to enable them to access all the required information and documents for dealing with urban heritage through developing a national system that shares national infrastructure and relies on the latest technologies of GIS, 3-D modeling, virtual reality and laser scanning.”
He said apps well be developed to help in the documentation, saving, monitoring, managing and updating of information continuously so as to rescue the remaining urban heritage sites. The major objective of this project is to list buildings and locations of urban heritage in the Kingdom.
It also includes a system for the registration, documentation, analysis, preservation, follow-up, and management of urban heritage, besides a system for tracking legal status, legislation, regulations, resolutions related to urban heritage, as well as merging the data of urban heritage resources with the national heritage registers.
Al-Naeem said the project will be expanded to include database of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and all the relevant bodies and institutions, which would help in achieving the strategic objectives.
According to him, the project includes standardizing the lists of urban heritage sites as well as rating and classifying them with coordinates and photographs and updating regularly the Global Positioning System (GPS) information and supporting in the future planning and management processes.
GPS also known as Navstar is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather conditions through satellites.
