The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF) have provided humanitarian assistance to the Republic of Chad, which includes 250 tents, six boreholes and a 101-Kva capacity power generator. Aid will be given to refugees at the Zafala camp, located at the Gaoui site in N’Djamena.

Around 6,000 returnees from the Central African Republic have been transferred to the camp by Chadian authorities amid efforts to evacuate overcrowded social centers in the capital.

Medical, food and non-food supplies have also been distributed to centers in Sahr, Sido, Doba and Mbitoye, where thousands of people have sought refuge after fleeing from the African nation.

The joint OIC-ISF humanitarian delegation, which visited Chad from Jan. 23 to Feb. 1 and was led by Ambassador Atta El-Manan Bakhit, OIC assistant secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs, held official talks with the Chadian prime minister, minister for social affairs and deputy minister for foreign affairs.

The delegation was provided with a comprehensive overview of the prevalent humanitarian situation in the country resulting from the massive influx of returnees and refugees. The head of the delegation requested that Chadian authorities brief the OIC secretary-general and develop an awareness campaign and a strategic humanitarian plan for victims of the socio-political crisis in the neighboring country.


Iyad Madani, OIC’s secretary-general, has urged all humanitarian stakeholders from the Muslim world to extend urgent assistance to the Republic of Chad.

He has appealed to governments, civil society organizations and philanthropists to contribute generously toward alleviating the suffering of the growing number of returnees in the country.
