Inspectors from the Ministry of Trade and Industry have caught a number of wholesale and retail traders in Makkah cheating consumers by packing low quality rice in sacks marked as top brands.
The confiscated rice was being sold at local markets. A number of traders were called to appear at the ministry’s headquarters and referred to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution.
Other food confiscated included 500 kilograms of biscuits, juices, spices and more than 100 consumer products such as cosmetics and hygiene products.
The inspectors also confiscated prohibited models of the Kaaba.
The raids took place with members of the security forces and targeted a number of markets and stores in Makkah.
The ministry said it would continue with its inspections to ensure traders do not cheat the public and to protect the health of consumers.
