JEDDAH: Some 38 private sector workers complained they were subjected to psychological harassment in the last two years.
The Human Rights Society registered complaints from workers from different cities. The workers are reported to have claimed financial compensation and transfer of sponsorship.
Among violations is confiscating workers’ documentation, which qualifies as psychological violence.
The head of the society in Jeddah, Saleh Sirhan, said some of its branches received worker complaints about workplace. He said the role of the branches is to communicate with the specialized labor committees that, in turn, must investigate and corroborate complaints about labor conditions or about wages that can be held up, delayed or not paid. He said there are also those that forbid changing sponsor and retain workers’ passports or visas, adding that sponsors have no right to do so.
Sirhan said the role of the society is to follow up on complaints of psychological violence, adding that workers’ committees have considerable role, but usually cases take a long time to be solved, depending on the company and/or establishments.
About 23 complaints were registered in Riyadh, 1 in Jeddah, 2 in Jazan, 4 in the Eastern Province, 1 in Jouf, 5 in Madina and 2 in Asir.
No complaints were registered in Makkah, according to Alwatan.
