JEDDAH: The Buraidah Dates Festival witnessed record trading of SR150 million in dates in the first nine days itself, the organizing committee has said.
The transactions were made between farmers, traders as well as consumers inside the dates city and the marketing outlets.
Deals were struck for two million date containers, and the “sukkary”, or suggary, kind of dates took the lion’s share, Abdulaziz Al-Mahoos, executive manager of the festival, said. The sales increased during the peak days, which are considered peak season of the “ripping dates” by farmers, especially after the heat wave in the region over the past three days.
He said the current season is considered one of the best for dates because of the abundant quantities and the increasing demand for the commodity from inside and outside the Kingdom.
The Ajwa date palms, which are very popular in Madinah, started to take dominance in Buraidah following its successful cultivation on the farms of Buraidah. The ajwa dates are particularly sought after in the Kingdom and abroad for its medicinal values.
